About Lura
I am a self-taught artist, engineering student, and lover of the outdoors.
Adventurers know the nonsensical enjoyment of type two fun, when an early alpine start leaves one cold, hungry, and tired but quickly fades into a feathery ski run, a beautiful sunrise, or a warm perch atop a cliff. Delight quickly overshadows the unpleasant feelings and leaves one wanting more. With my art, I try to toe the line between make-believe and physical experiences, to capture the fleeting, but ecstatic moments among the drearier ones. I love using unconventional colors, freedom, and wildness in my work to invoke the shared experience of time spent in nature.

My work is mostly acrylic paint on various mediums, including discarded materials such as scrap wood, old skis and cardboard. As a nature lover, I re-create the outdoors through art whenever I am not able to be outside.
Preparing the Surface
The surface is prepared for painting by cycling through progressively finer sand paper, beginning with a planer if necessary to smooth the surface for painting.
Reclaiming Wood
First, I collect pieces of wood from home improvement scrap piles, building demolition, and woodworking projects. These items are often beat up and require some shaping.
Laying a Base
The surface is further prepared for painting by applying a smooth coat of primer and paint. The combination of the two allows paint to fill any irregularities left in the wood, providing a smooth surface to begin to block in shapes and details.
Painting and Finishing
Basic shapes and colors are first blocked in, and lines or a grid are applied to the block. Layer upon layer, with increasing detail are added to provide depth.
Finished Product
Wood pieces are finished with a light clear coat, and canvas pieces are finished with light varnish. Some pieces are framed, and others are left with natural or painted wood sides, especially if the wood grain is especially striking.
